About the Breast Implant Removal Procedure
Breast implant removal surgery (also known as breast explant surgery) is an outpatient procedure, meaning you can go home the same day. To begin, an anesthesiologist will place you under general anesthesia and make sure you are comfortable and pain-free. Then an incision will be made either at the lower crease of your breast or around the areola. When possible, we choose the same incision site used for your breast implants to avoid creating a new scar.
Dr. Kutty will then remove your implants and any surrounding scar tissue. Additional procedures like implant replacements and/or a breast lift will be performed at this time. Finally, Dr. Kutty will close the incision and, if necessary, place a drain to eliminate the risk of swelling. Compression bandages are used as well to prevent fluid build-up during recovery.
What to Expect After Breast Implant Removal
Once you are awake and alert after surgery, we will provide you with all of the information you need to know regarding proper aftercare, including how to care for your incisions and what activities you should avoid. We will also discuss pain relief and schedule a follow-up appointment.
Full recovery typically takes four to six weeks. During this time, it is normal to feel sore and swollen, though do seek medical attention if you notice any bleeding or asymmetrical swelling, or if you are experiencing a significant amount of fluid drainage. Infections are rare after breast implant removal, but it’s important to speak with your doctor about any unusual symptoms.
