Pregnancy and childbirth are amazing experiences for a woman. They’re also very taxing on a woman’s figure as the body goes through numerous changes to accommodate her growing child. Sometimes a woman may regain her pre-pregnancy figure after childbirth but for many moms, especially those who have had multiple pregnancies, the changes to their figure last much longer.
At Luxe Plastic Surgery, our board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Malik Kutty offers the mommy makeover procedure to help women regain their figure and restore their confidence in the way they look. Customized to your specific needs, a mommy makeover can trim, tone, and tighten areas of the body that may be unflattering because of pregnancy and childbirth.

What is a Mommy Makeover?
The mommy makeover is an opportunity to revitalize your figure and reverse the effects of pregnancy and aging with your choice of surgical and non-surgical procedures. After pregnancy, every woman’s body is affected differently; however, we find that the most common issues are:
- Protruding belly
- Loose skin
- Changes to the breasts
- Stretch marks
- Hard-to-lose pockets of fat
During pregnancy, the body gains weight to make room for your growing child. Your breasts also get bigger as they produce milk and a number of hormonal fluctuations occur to compensate for the many changes occurring inside your body. All of these things combine to make you feel uncomfortable and feel unlike yourself. Getting that pre-baby body back is difficult for many, as the physical and mental stresses, lack of sleep, and lifestyle changes can make losing weight feel impossible.
The mommy makeover combines multiple procedures to help you gain your figure back after having children. Which procedures are used is dependent on your exact needs and desires. The procedures that can be included in a mommy makeover are:
- Breast augmentation
- Breast lift
- Breast reduction
- Tummy tuck
- Thigh lift
- Buttock augmentation
Dr. Kutty may even recommend other procedures not listed above depending on your cosmetic goals. This can be discussed during your comprehensive consultation.
Benefits of the Mommy Makeover
The mommy makeover procedure has many benefits for several areas of your body. Through our multiple breast surgeries, we can help replace lost volume, correct any sagging that occurred after breastfeeding, or to balance out the body’s proportions if your breasts grew too much. The goal of these surgeries is to restore the shape and volume of your breasts to what it was before the kid(s) came along.
The part of the body most affected by pregnancy is generally the abdomen. As a baby grows, the uterus enlarges to such a degree that the muscle layer of the abdomen stretches out. The fascia (connective tissue) between individual muscles stretches as well but does not have the capacity to shrink back to its original tightness. Each successive pregnancy makes it worse. Working out, even doing crunches all day, gives limited improvement because while the muscles themselves are stronger, the fascia is still weak.
Abdominoplasty, also known as a tummy tuck, eliminates extra skin and stretch marks on your abdomen. The abdominal muscles are also tightened to improve the shape of the torso. Your shape can actually be made better than before your first pregnancy when reshaping is combined with targeted liposuction.
Body sculpting, also known as liposuction, can reduce unwanted, localized deposits of fat that remain even after diet and exercise. Liposuction can be used to achieve a smoother body contour and more comfortable fit in clothing.
Mommy Makeover Candidates
Because a mommy makeover involves multiple surgeries across various parts of your body it’s important to first determine if you’re a suitable candidate for the treatment. This means making sure that you’re healthy enough to undergo multiple body contouring procedures. Being in a good state of health helps keep you safe during the procedure and aids in the recovery process after the procedure.
It’s also important to note that we recommended patients wait a period of time after giving birth before having the mommy makeover or any plastic surgery procedure. This is to allow your body time to recover from the many changes it went through during pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding. Generally, a woman can have the mommy makeover procedure as soon as six months after giving birth but more time may be required if your body is still losing the pregnancy weight or you’re currently breastfeeding or lactating.
Dr. Kutty will determine your candidacy during your comprehensive consultation. However, for those who are curious, ideal candidates for the mommy makeover, and most plastic surgery procedures, include those who:
- Are at or near a healthy, stable weight
- Are in good overall health
- Do not suffer from any diseases or illnesses
- Are not on any blood-thinning medications or those that impair healing
- Do not smoke or can quit before, during, and after the procedure
- Have positive and realistic expectations
- Are finished with childbearing
In regards to the last bullet point mentioned for ideal candidates, it is possible to continue having children after undergoing the mommy makeover procedure. However, going through the pregnancy and childbirth process may undo the positive results from the mommy makeover. None of the procedures performed in your mommy makeover will inhibit you from having another child but your body may require additional surgeries to achieve what the original mommy makeover had.
Mommy Makeover Recovery
One of the most important things to consider for the mommy makeover procedure, other than your candidacy, is the recovery process. Since you’ll be having multiple procedures, you’ll need to plan ahead for childcare and other aspects of parenting life. Taking time off from work or chasing the kids around is essential to a proper recovery and to maximize your results. The recovery period is generally around 3-4 weeks but may vary depending on the types of procedures you had. During this time rest and restricted activity are critical to your recovery.
Once your surgeries are complete you’ll be fitted with bandages and gauze on any incisions you may have. If you’ve had breast surgery you may be supplied with a support bra or bandages to help with swelling and to support the breasts as they heal. Any surgeries to your abdomen, thighs, or buttocks will require compression garments to help minimize swelling and aid in the healing process.
Dr. Kutty will go over all of this with you in further detail before your surgeries. Understanding how to take care of yourself before and after the mommy makeover procedure will help you heal and recover sooner so you can enjoy the positive results achieved. Other information and instructions you can expect to receive for recovery include:
- How to properly care for the incision sites
- What kind and how much medication to take and when
- How to monitor your surgical sites to ensure proper healing
- When to schedule follow-up visits
We recommend keeping in close touch with our office and Dr. Kutty during your recovery period. If you have any complications or have specific concerns regarding any aspect of your recovery it’s important that you let us know so we can help you maintain the aesthetic results achieved with your mommy makeover.
