Your eyes are the primary focus point of your face. Most people look directly at your eyes when they speak to you. Puffiness of the eyelids and extra eyelid skin can cause a tired, unrested appearance.
Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and muscle from both upper and lower eyelids. Underlying fatty tissue that produces bagginess can be selectively removed or repositioned. Blepharoplasty can improve drooping skin and bagginess. For most patients, the lower eyelids can be treated with no external incisions.
It can help improve vision in older patients who have hooding of their upper eyelids. Blepharoplasty will not remove "crow’s feet" or other wrinkles, eliminate dark circles under the eyes, or lift sagging eyebrows. Eyebrow drooping is addressed with brow lifting techniques.
What Happens During Eyelid Surgery?
Blepharoplasty is a procedure that approximately takes 1-2 hours and you will go home the same day. You rest after surgery but can resume most light activity. Sutures are normally removed within 4-5 days after surgery. Most patients return to non-strenuous work 7-10 days following surgery. Strenuous activities can be resumed at approximately 3 weeks after surgery.
Eyelid surgery can be done in conjunction with a browlift to maximize the impact if the eyebrows have also descended with age.
For patients whose complaint is limited to extra skin only on the upper eyelids, the procedure can be done in the office under purely local anesthesia. This procedure takes 30-45 minutes and is extremely well tolerated. The use of only local anesthesia means avoiding all of the side effects of general anesthesia.
It’s important to see a Board-certified plastic surgeon who can recommend the appropriate treatment for your individual problem. It also matters because blepharoplasty surgery must be done very precisely to avoid complications, and Board certification means the ability to do just that.
