Eyelid surgery, also called Eyelid Lift or Blepharoplasty, is the surgical removal of excess skin, muscle and fat in the upper or lower eyelids.

Who is right for eyelid surgery?

If you are experiencing droopy, sagging lids or bags under your eyes, you may be an excellent candidate for an “eyelid lift”, known as a blepharoplasty procedure.

Good candidates are generally healthy; beside that, no one is “too old” for the procedure.  Those who smoke must stop prior to the procedure to minimize risks such as bleeding and poor wound healing.

Can it be done in an office setting, or is it necessary to go to a hospital?

In most cases eyelid surgery can be done in an office setting, under local anesthesia.  This is especially so when the problem is limited to extra, loose skin.  Most patients experience minimal to no discomfort during, and even after the procedure.  Office-based, local anesthesia eyelid surgery will, in almost all cases, cost significantly less than eyelid surgery that requires hospital admission (as much as half the cost).

How long is the recovery time?

Typically, recovery time from eyelid surgery is a little over a week.  During that first week, you can expect modest swelling, which is easily managed with homeopathic medication and ice. Sutures are removed within the first week, and swelling is minimal after 10 days or so.

Keep in mind that while these effects last for the first one to two weeks, you will otherwise be able to do fairly normal activity within the first couple of days.  The main restriction is lifting or straining.

For most patients, after the first several days they will look like they would with environmental allergies.  In fact, many patients tell others just that.

When can I go back to work?

Basic light activity can be resumed essentially right away, as soon as the swelling permits.  The ability to return to work depends largely on what your work involves.  More strenuous jobs require a longer recovery.

What can I expect after my eyelid surgery?

You can expect to look more vibrant and youthful!  The most dramatic effect is that you will look better-rested than ever.
