Embarrassed by overly large breasts?
Tired of constant back pain and having to walk hunched over?
Breast reduction is a surgical procedure to reduce the weight and size of the breasts to improve comfort and other symptoms such as back pain. Factors such as pregnancy, nursing, weight change, aging and gravity produce changes in the appearance and size of a woman's breasts. This operation can also reduce the size of the areola. There are a variety of different techniques along with surgical approaches for this procedure. Your preferences, anatomy and your surgeon's recommendation will determine the technique and approach.
Incisions do leave scars, but are placed such that they can be hidden as well as possible with normal clothing
The procedure takes 2-4 hours. You will most likely go home the same day.
Usually, dissolving sutures are used. There are occasionally a few sutures that are removed at 3 weeks post-op. Return to non-strenuous work in 1 - 3 weeks. Return to strenuous activities in 6 - 8 weeks. Most swelling, bruising and soreness subsides within 6 months. The scar will continue to fade for up to 2 years.
Many insurance companies will also cover breast reduction surgery if the patient is symptomatic from large breasts with back pain, shoulder pain, grooves in the shoulders from her bra straps, or infections and moisture problems under the breasts requiring treatment. Some women cannot participate in normal activity because of the size of their breasts, and cannot even find appropriately-sized clothing. The possibility of obtaining insurance coverage for this operation can usually be determined at the consultation visit.
