Liposuction Questions

Houston - Sugar Land - Katy, Texas

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure for removing unwanted fat deposits that are resistant to diet and exercise.

Is liposuction a substitute for diet and exercise?

No. Liposuction is a body contouring technique designed to help you achieve stubborn fat deposits that remain after you have reached your stable goal weight. The goal is to add on to the work you’ve already accomplished to give you a figure better than what you could achieve on your own.

Will I lose weight after my liposuction procedure?

Maybe. The goal of liposuction is not weight loss, but some patients do lose some weight. Most patients, however, gain an equivalent amount from fluids injected during the procedure. By the time time you have recovered from the procedure, your weight will have equalized and you are unlikely to see any significant weight loss.

What areas can be treated with liposuction?

Liposuction is a versatile procedure that can be used on many areas of the body. These areas include:

  • Face and neck
  • Upper arms
  • Back (bra rolls)
  • Chest (gynecomastia correction)
  • Abdomen
  • Love handles or flanks
  • Hips
  • Thighs
  • Knees
  • Calves and ankles (“cankles”)

Are there different types of liposuction?

Yes. The most common type of liposuction used today is the tumescent liposuction procedure. Other types include ultrasound-assisted liposuction, power-assisted liposuction, and laser-assisted liposuction. Individual surgeons report better results with one procedure or another, but there is no across-the-board consensus that any procedure is better than the others. Dr. Kutty will recommend the best procedure for getting you the results you desire.

What is recovery from liposuction like?

For larger areas, at first you may be groggy, but you should be able to get up and about the day of your procedure. Light exercise is encouraged. You will have to wear a compression garment for 24 hours a day for the first 2-4 weeks, then for 12 hours a day for up to 4 more weeks. Expect to take a week off work, and some people should take 2. By 4 weeks, most patients are fully recovered and ready to return to strenuous activities.

For small areas, treatment is performed in the office under local anesthesia, and the recovery period is much shorter. You should be back to work and most normal activities in just a few days!
