What are the incision options for breast augmentation?

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Malik Kutty offers our Houston area patients three choices for breast augmentation incisions:

  • Periariolar – in the dark skin around your nipple
  • Inframammary – underneath your breast in your natural breast crease
  • Transaxillary – through the armpit

The location of your incision will play a determining role in the final aesthetics of your surgery. Dr. Kutty will help you decide what option is best for you.

What are my breast augmentation implant placement options?

You can choose to have your breast implants placed either above or below your chest muscles. The placement of your implant will determine your final aesthetic results. Submuscular, or below the muscle placement, will give you a more natural look and may also decrease your risk of complications such as capsular contracture. However, the surgical and recovery time for this placement is longer than that for subglandular, or above the muscle placement. This decision will be based on your anatomy and your final aesthetic desires.

What are my breast implant options?

You may choose to have either saline or silicone filled breast implants. Saline implants are filled after placement and may allow for a smaller incision. However, saline implants do not look or feel as natural as silicone breast implants. Women between the ages of 18 and 22 can only have saline implants, but many over the age of 22 prefer silicone due to their ability to provide a better looking and feeling end result.

How long in the recovery period following breast augmentation?

Your recovery will depend on your incision location, the placement of your implants, and your body’s natural ability to heal. In general, you should be able to return to work within 5 to 14 days and resume your full exercise routine after 4 weeks. Dr. Kutty will be able to give you more specific instructions based on your unique body and the breast augmentation decisions you make.

Swelling may be present for several months with submuscular placement, but bruising should subside within 14 days. Dr. Kutty will instruct you in ways to control discomfort and reduce swelling during your recovery period.
